Spatial Disorientation Practice Test

Graveyard spiral tests how spatial disorientation in a banked turn with limited outside references can trap a pilot in a descent. When you’re in a turn, gravity and the aircraft’s descent combine to create a downward path, and if you lack reliable visual cues, your vestibular system may mislead you into thinking you’re level. The result is an unperceived loss of altitude that continues as you remain in the turn, so unless you deliberately check your instruments and intervene, the airplane can descend more and more steeply in a tightening spiral. The key is recognizing the descent from the instruments—attitude and altitude—and promptly reducing bank, stopping the turn, and leveling off to arrest the spiral. It’s not typically something you can rely on visual cues to detect, especially in clouds or night, and it’s not something that simply improves on its own; corrective action based on instruments is essential.
